October in Cocoa Beach isn't one month with one mood. It's four consecutive weekends, each one pulling the town toward a different stretch of pavement, and each one raising money for something different along the way. If you only paid attention to one Saturday, you'd walk away with a completely different idea of what October here actually looks like.
Start at the pier. The 41st Annual Rich Salick Pro/Am Surf Festival runs October 10 through 12 at the Westgate Resorts Cocoa Beach Pier, and it's billed as the largest surfing charity competition in the world. That's not just professional and amateur surf heats. The weekend also folds in stand-up paddleboard racing, tandem surfing, skateboarding and karate demonstrations, plus the kind of family programming that turns a competition into a three-day gathering. Every dollar raised goes to the National Kidney Foundation of Florida, funding patient services, research, and organ donation education. If you live within walking distance of the pier, this is the weekend the beach fills with boards, banners, and volunteers, not the usual mix of tourists and dog walkers.
Six days later, the crowd shifts. The Heart Behind the Hits Friday Fest & Songwriter Festival takes over downtown Cocoa Beach the weekend of October 16 through 18, with Cocoa Beach Main Street's own calendar anchoring the core of it on the 17th and 18th. Local organizers describe it as a weekend of Nashville in downtown Cocoa Beach, and that's a fair way to picture it: songwriters trading sets in a strip of town that spends most of the year sounding like beach bars and surf shops, not open mic nights. It's a different soundtrack in a different part of the city, happening while the pier has already gone quiet from the surf festival crowd.
That same weekend has a second, smaller thread running underneath it. Sandbar Sports Grill is hosting its own fundraiser on October 17 and 18, an all-you-can-drink beer garden priced at thirty dollars, with the band Vintage playing from nine to one and proceeds benefiting Space Coast Sled Hockey. So on one weekend in mid-October, downtown Cocoa Beach is hosting a songwriter festival while a neighborhood sports bar a few blocks away is running its own raffle-and-silent-auction night for a completely different cause. Two events, two donor bases, one weekend.
October 24 is where the split stops being local and becomes regional. The 5th Annual Space Coast Brewfest, hosted by the North Brevard Rotary, sets up inside the Valiant Air Command Warbird Museum, an indoor, climate-controlled hangar space surrounded by historic aircraft, up in Titusville. More than 30 breweries pour that day alongside food trucks and a live DJ, all under cover, rain or shine. At the same time, Cocoa Beach Main Street is running its Costume Party Sip-n-Stroll through downtown, a walkable event with limited tickets that draws a different kind of crowd than a hangar full of craft beer thirty minutes north. One event asks you to get in the car and head up the county. The other asks you to park downtown and stay on foot. Both are happening on the same Saturday, which means the question isn't whether something's going on that day. It's whether you're spending it in Cocoa Beach at all.
Halloween itself doesn't try to compete with any of that. After three weekends of organized, ticketed, charity-driven programming, October 31 settles back into the kind of night Cocoa Beach handles at the bar level rather than the festival level. Sandbar Sports Grill closes out the month with a Halloween Eve rave running into November 1, EDM, lasers, glowsticks, drink specials, the whole late-night version of the holiday rather than a daytime family event. It's a smaller, more informal close to a month that spent its bigger energy on surfing, songwriting, and beer.
Here's the pattern once you line it up:
Weekend | What's happening | Where |
|---|---|---|
Oct 10-12 | 41st Rich Salick Pro/Am Surf Festival, surf heats plus SUP, tandem, skate and karate, benefiting the National Kidney Foundation | Westgate Resorts Cocoa Beach Pier |
Oct 16-18 | Heart Behind the Hits Friday Fest & Songwriter Festival | Downtown Cocoa Beach |
Oct 17-18 | All-you-can-drink beer garden with band Vintage, benefiting Space Coast Sled Hockey | Sandbar Sports Grill |
Oct 24 | 5th Annual Space Coast Brewfest, 30+ breweries, hosted by North Brevard Rotary | Valiant Air Command Warbird Museum, Titusville |
Oct 24 | Costume Party Sip-n-Stroll | Downtown Cocoa Beach / Cocoa Beach Main Street |
Oct 31-Nov 1 | Halloween Eve Rave, EDM and lasers | Sandbar Sports Grill |
What stands out isn't the density of events. Plenty of Florida beach towns pack their calendars in the fall. It's that three of these four weekends are tied to a specific charitable beneficiary, and each one is a different organization. The National Kidney Foundation gets the surf festival's proceeds. Space Coast Sled Hockey gets the Sandbar beer garden. The North Brevard Rotary runs the Brewfest to fund its own community programs. That's not one big annual fundraiser with a single cause attached. It's three separate civic organizations each claiming a weekend, running their own version of a festival, and drawing a somewhat different crowd of locals and visitors to do it.
It also means the geography of "what's happening this weekend" actually moves. Week one puts you at the pier. Week two splits you between downtown and a Sandbar parking lot. Week three splits you again, this time between a hangar in Titusville and Minutemen Causeway back home. Week four brings you back to a neighborhood bar for something a lot less organized. If you live here and only check the calendar once a month, you'd miss how much the center of gravity shifts week to week, and how far some of that fundraising energy actually travels before it comes back to town.
None of this requires planning your whole month around it. But if you've been meaning to catch one of these, worth knowing where it actually is, since the pier crowd, the downtown crowd, and the Titusville crowd this October are not the same crowd twice.
